  • W.E. Carlson Supplies Doors
    for Harsh, Intense Working
    Conditions

From start-to-finish, every stage of ArcelorMittal’s steel mill operations—located on the blustery shores of Lake Michigan—is a dirty, potentially environmentally hazardous, and often dangerous undertaking.

The coke plant sends abrasive, invasive coke dust into the air, wrecking havoc on machinery and the environment. During the refinery process, slag is separated from the top of the melted metal before being hauled off under strict EPA-regulated guidelines. Raw steel is run through an acid and water bath to clean off impurities before it’s off to the temper mill and baked at temperatures ranging from 2,300 – 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Not your typical fork truck

A slab of finished steel weighs three to five tons. Fork truck vs. industrial door accidents may be a problem for a typical W.E. Carlson Corporation door customer, but for Eddis Clark, ArcelorMittal’s Door Division Supervisor, fork trucks are the least of his worries. “I’m dealing with equipment like Slab Haulers and Coil Carriers that can pick up six to eight slabs like they are paperweights and carry them around the plant,” said Clark. “Some of these machines have tires that are more than seven feet tall! And sometimes the guys get impatient, and don’t want to wait for the door to open all the way before they head on through, smashing into the bottom of the doors.”

Clark and his crew of three to four are responsible for purchasing, installing and maintaining all of the industrial doors—which at one point totaled more than 1,300—throughout the entire facility. His primary concerns are the weather: wind tunnels created by the “breeze” off the lake can literally blow the doors off track, and moisture needs to be controlled to minimize rust; chemicals: acid, coke dust and other abrasive contaminants provide for a rough operating environment; and incidental contact from the heavy machinery traffic.

    A Door for Every Environment

For more than four years, Eddis Clark has turned to W.E. Carlson Corporation for all of ArcelorMittal’s industrial door needs. No matter the application, W.E. Carlson has a door built to meet their harsh, rugged conditions and strict government standards.

Trak-Line Doors: Perfect for large openings and high traffic flow, these impactable, rugged doors open and close automatically.

Sectional Doors: Used for smaller openings with a low volume of traffic.

Steel Rolling Doors: Protect environment from harsh winter winds off of Lake Michigan.

Safety Barrier Doors: Protect personnel from the hazards of a production area by inhibiting accidental entry.
